St. Louis musician Emerson Magaña’s debut album, “Tequila Time," is inspired by his time performing with his father in the beachside tourist town Barra de Navidad.
Magaña moved to St. Louis about three years ago. Growing up in Colima, Mexico with a father who sang and played guitar, he said he quickly fell in love with the instrument and followed in his father’s footsteps – though it wasn’t easy for his father to get him to play at first.
“I remember he tried to teach me guitar since I was a kid, but I said ‘I don't like it,’” Magaña said. “I decided to play with my friends [instead] and later my family came to my home for vacation and my cousin asked my dad, ‘Can you teach me guitar?’ And I felt so jealous. I said ‘I want to play guitar too. Can you teach me too?’”

"My interest in music began early under my father’s influence. I decided to enroll in the Institute of Fine Arts of the State of Colima, Mexico, which marked the beginning of my formal musical education—four years of dedication and perseverance led me to emerge as a Classical Guitar Master. This title would be the cornerstone of my musical career. "
